Direct answer
Employer life insurance follows the terms of the group plan. Before retirement or another employment change, confirm what coverage you have, when eligibility changes, and what actions or deadlines apply. Do not assume a payroll deduction proves the same benefit will continue indefinitely.
Find the documents that describe your benefit
Ask the benefits administrator for your current life insurance certificate or benefit summary and the relevant plan contact. Record the coverage amount and whether it is employer-paid, employee-paid, or a combination. Group insurance resources, such as New York Life’s employee information, direct members to their actual benefit materials. New York Life: Employee Group Insurance Resources
Keep life insurance separate from health insurance and retirement account paperwork in your notes. They may appear in the same benefits portal but answer different questions. Label each document with the employer and date so old and current information do not become mixed.
Request a written explanation of the change
Ask what happens on your planned retirement date or employment change. Confirm any scheduled benefit changes and the date your current eligibility ends, if applicable. The Texas insurance guide explains that employer group coverage has terms distinct from individual coverage. Texas Department of Insurance: Life Insurance Guide
Use your own plan details. A coworker may have a different employment classification, benefit election, or retirement arrangement. Write down the name and contact information of the person who can clarify discrepancies between a summary and the full documents.
Ask about portability and conversion separately
As a carrier-specific example, OneAmerica describes portability as continuing employer group term coverage, while conversion provides an individual whole life policy. Its published process has eligibility conditions and requires the application and premium within 31 days after group coverage ends. That deadline is not a rule for every employer or insurer. Ask HR and the insurer for your own certificate’s end date, available options, deadline, required payment and future premium schedule in writing. Put the deadline on your calendar before retirement. For broader household needs, see coverage decisions approaching retirement.
Put every deadline on one calendar
If your plan describes options or required elections, ask for their forms, deadlines, and applicable costs. Confirm which office must receive each item and how receipt is acknowledged. Do not assume a benefits conversation counts as completing an election.
Build a short checklist: document received, question answered, action required, due date, and confirmation saved. Even if no action is necessary, record that answer. A clear checklist can prevent an otherwise careful retirement plan from leaving a benefits question unresolved until after the change occurs.
Connect the confirmed benefit to your family plan
Once you know the applicable benefit, add it to the worksheet for final costs and any continuing dependent needs. Keep uncertain amounts separate until they are verified. Ask how beneficiaries can find the plan contact and submit a claim if needed.
For a hypothetical retiree, the key discovery may simply be that the family has outdated contact information. For another, an unanswered eligibility question may need prompt attention. Start with the paperwork and actual needs rather than assuming every employee or retiree should make the same insurance decision.
