Leaving a union job can end, reduce, or change workplace life insurance, depending on the actual employer or benefit-fund plan. Ask for the exact termination date and any portability, conversion, or continuation rights before your departure. A union card, pension entitlement, or COBRA health election does not establish continued life coverage. An individual policy you already own generally continues under its own terms, provided its funding and other requirements are met.

Find out which event changes eligibility
Start by describing the change accurately: resigning, moving to another contributing employer, accepting a nonunion job, retiring, or being laid off. A plan may treat those events differently. Do not assume that working in the same trade means contributions go to the same fund.
Ask the administrator to identify the rule that applies and send a dated response. Include the proposed final workday and the first day at the next employer. A payroll deduction can lag behind coverage changes, so a deduction on a final paycheck is not enough to establish the end date.
For a multiemployer arrangement, confirm whether contributions, credited hours, or an eligibility bank extend coverage and whether the life benefit follows the same rule as medical coverage. The broader layoff and reduced-hours guide focuses on those details.
JFZ is not affiliated with a union, employer, or benefit fund. The administrator and insurer must confirm your benefit rights; a private insurance discussion cannot extend a deadline in a group contract.
Use a departure worksheet with separate dates
On smaller screens, scroll the table to compare every column.
| Information to record | Person or document to consult |
|---|---|
| Last eligible day for basic life coverage | Current certificate and plan administrator |
| Last eligible day for supplemental and dependent coverage | Benefit schedule and insurer |
| Portability request and payment deadline, if offered | Portability notice and application |
| Conversion request and first-premium deadline, if offered | Conversion provision and insurer |
| New employer's effective date and enrollment conditions | New employer's benefit office |
| Individual coverage effective date | Issued policy and insurer confirmation |
Keep the dates separate even when they appear to match. An employer enrollment deadline is not necessarily the insurance effective date. Your own coverage and your spouse's dependent coverage may also end under different provisions.
Ask what happens if death occurs during a conversion period and whether the group contract provides a specific death-benefit protection during that interval. Obtain the written provision instead of assuming a grace period exists. Keep dated copies of requests, receipts, and submitted applications.
Compare portability and conversion without treating them as synonyms
Portability commonly refers to retaining eligible group term coverage after the employment relationship changes, with premiums paid directly under the available arrangement. It may have age limits, amount limits, health requirements, or later rate changes. The particular certificate governs.
Conversion generally refers to changing eligible group life coverage into an individual policy offered under the conversion provision. A contractual conversion right may avoid new evidence of insurability, but the policy type and premium can differ substantially from the prior benefit. Do not assume it preserves the employer-paid price.
MetLife's public continuation explanation distinguishes these routes and notes that some portability arrangements allow medical questions for preferred rates or increased amounts. It is a carrier-specific explanation; your own certificate determines the available choices. MetLife continuation options.
As a historical plan illustration, the Utah Operating Engineers' 2018 published plan document describes a life conversion option with an application and first-payment deadline. That example demonstrates why the full certificate matters; it is not a statement of current benefits for your plan or every Operating Engineers member. Request all current amendments and written confirmation from your own administrator. Official Utah plan document, employee life insurance chapter.
A useful comparison asks for the offered amount, policy type, premium now, future premium schedule, deadline, underwriting conditions, and any benefit changes. If a deadline is approaching, contact the existing insurer promptly even if you are also shopping for an individual policy. A pending application elsewhere does not preserve an expiring contractual right.
Do not use the COBRA election as a life insurance answer
Federal COBRA addresses continuation of group health benefits. The Department of Labor specifically says plans providing only life insurance or disability benefits are not covered by COBRA. A health continuation package therefore should not be read as a promise that the same life or accidental-death benefits remain active. DOL explanation of COBRA coverage.
A particular plan might offer a separate self-payment arrangement or another right. Ask which benefits that arrangement includes and what ends when it expires. Paying one invoice does not necessarily continue every benefit that appeared on your former employee portal.
Check the gap between employers
Consider a hypothetical worker whose old life benefit ends at month-end and whose new employer benefit starts after a waiting period. The employment transition may feel continuous, yet life coverage can have an interval without protection. The worker needs the actual dates and continuation options; a reassuring verbal statement that benefits are offered at the new job is insufficient.
The next employer might require active-at-work status on the effective date or additional evidence for an elected supplemental amount. Ask whether dependent elections have their own requirements. This is not a prediction that a claim will be denied; it is a way to identify conditions before relying on coverage.
An individually owned policy may provide continuity beyond one employer, but applying is not the same as having active coverage. Underwriting, acceptance, premium payment, and policy delivery conditions can matter. The underwriting process guide explains the distinction between a preliminary quote and an insurer's decision.
Recheck the amount instead of automatically replacing it dollar for dollar
The old benefit may have been an employer-selected flat amount or earnings multiple. Your new need should reflect remaining household support, debt, caregiving, and resources. Replacing precisely the old amount can leave either a gap or unnecessary premium expense.
Separate the short transition problem from a longer family goal. A conversion election could address a valuable expiring right, while a separately evaluated term policy might address years of income support. Comparing both does not mean buying both is appropriate. Confirm the entire cost and whether coverage overlaps intentionally.
If health has changed since the original group enrollment, discuss contractual continuation rights before letting them expire. Avoid cancelling an existing individual policy merely because a new employer offers coverage. Review its purpose and the terms first.
Finish the administrative handoff
Update mailing and email addresses with the plan so notices can reach you after employer access ends. Download permissible benefit documents before your work account closes, and use secure methods for personal information. Keep beneficiary confirmations for each policy; designations at the new employer do not automatically update old individual coverage.
Give an appropriate household member the current insurer and administrator contacts. If you have already left and are unsure about coverage, ask immediately for the termination notice and any available election rights. Do not wait for a general annual review while a time-limited option may be running.
For a JFZ discussion, bring the old certificate, continuation offers, new employer schedule, and any individual policies. We can help compare the protection objective and insurance options using those documents. The existing inquiry form starts follow-up; it neither elects a workplace benefit nor guarantees a new policy will be available before a deadline.
Quick recap
- The last workday and the last day of life coverage can differ.
- Portability and conversion are different rights with plan-specific requirements and deadlines.
- Federal COBRA health continuation does not automatically continue life insurance.
- Confirm replacement coverage is effective before relying on it.
