Life insurance through a multiemployer benefit plan may depend on contributions, credited work, eligibility periods, or other plan rules. A layoff does not always end coverage immediately, and a remaining hour-bank balance does not automatically guarantee it continues. Request a written life-benefit eligibility determination for the months in question, including the expected end date and continuation options. Review the life certificate as well as the health-plan materials before relying on either one.

Identify the fund and the benefit involved
A multiemployer arrangement can receive contributions from more than one participating employer. For a worker moving between covered employers, that structure may help coordinate benefits, but it does not mean all employers or all work count. The collective bargaining agreement, trust rules, and individual eligibility record matter.
Write down the exact fund name, employer, bargaining unit or applicable employee class, and life insurer if there is one. Confirm whether your question concerns basic life, supplemental life, dependent life, or accidental death. A general statement that you have benefits can leave the important question unanswered.
The administrator should identify the documents and amendments controlling your coverage. JFZ has no union or benefit-fund affiliation and cannot certify those rights. This guide explains how to gather the information necessary for a private coverage review.
Separate hours worked, hours credited, and coverage months
An eligibility bank generally means credits accumulated under a plan's rules that may support later coverage. The unit might be hours or contributions. It is not necessarily cash you own or can withdraw. Maximum balances, monthly deductions, qualifying-work rules, and expiration conditions are plan-specific.
An eligibility lag means work or contributions in one period determine coverage for a later period. Because employers must report work and remit contributions, the month printed on a paycheck may not be the month it funds.
For a clearly labeled historical illustration, the Utah Operating Engineers' 2018 official plan document uses an hour bank and a lag month. It also describes events that can freeze or end eligibility despite a balance. These features illustrate questions to ask; do not apply that old schedule or its numerical thresholds to your present benefits. Utah plan document, eligibility and termination chapters.
Ask your current administrator to map each recent work month to the credited contribution and corresponding coverage month. This is more useful than attempting to calculate an end date from an old booklet without the current record.
Request an eligibility ledger when work changes
On smaller screens, scroll the table to compare every column.
| Record | What to compare | Question it can resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Pay stubs and work reports | Employer, work dates, reported hours | Were the correct work periods reported? |
| Fund contribution record | Contributions received or required | Is a missing credit an administrative issue? |
| Eligibility-bank statement | Opening balance, credits, deductions | What remains available under current rules? |
| Written coverage confirmation | Benefit type and covered months | Is life insurance active for the date you need? |
| Termination or continuation notice | Effective date and deadlines | What action is required to avoid losing an option? |
If the records disagree, send a specific request: identify the employer, work period, and discrepancy rather than simply asking whether you are covered. Keep copies and dates. Follow the plan's formal review or appeal process where necessary; a private insurance application does not resolve a fund's recordkeeping dispute.
Do not publish payroll information or personal identifiers in a public inquiry. Share sensitive benefit records only through an appropriate secure process after discussing what is needed.
Ask how your reason for reduced work is classified
A temporary layoff, disability leave, voluntary leave, retirement, and work for a nonparticipating employer can be different events. An out-of-work registration or notice to the fund may matter under a particular plan. Ask what documentation must be supplied and by which date.
TeamCare's current public eligibility FAQ distinguishes weekly-contribution and hourly-contribution situations when discussing return from layoff, and directs participants with hourly contributions to contact the plan. That is a TeamCare health-eligibility example, not evidence that its life benefit follows an identical schedule. It demonstrates why the administrator needs the actual contribution arrangement. TeamCare eligibility FAQ.
If you are receiving disability benefits, ask separately whether a life premium-waiver or extended-benefit provision exists, whether you qualify, and what proof it requires. Do not assume a disability claim automatically keeps every other policy in force.
Check life insurance separately from medical continuation
Federal COBRA health continuation does not automatically preserve life insurance. DOL's worker guide states that plans providing only life insurance or disability benefits are outside COBRA. Your plan may have additional contractual self-payment or conversion provisions, but those need separate verification. Department of Labor COBRA guide.
Ask whether a self-payment covers life, dependent life, accidental death, health benefits, or only some of them. Record the payment amount, first due date, duration, and what happens at its end. If conversion or portability is available, request those deadlines immediately rather than waiting until an eligibility-bank balance reaches zero.
The job-departure guide explains how to compare those continuation rights. A temporary layoff may call for different options than a permanent departure, but both require an exact insurance end date.
Consider a timeline instead of a blanket assumption
Imagine a hypothetical worker who stops receiving assignments in September and sees remaining eligibility credits online. A coworker says coverage continues through winter. The worker should request confirmation for October, November, and December specifically, including which benefits remain active and whether registration, contribution, or payment conditions apply.
Suppose the fund later confirms life coverage through November but health coverage can continue longer under a separate election. That creates a life-insurance decision for December even though the worker still has health coverage. The example is invented to illustrate the question; it describes no real fund's schedule.
When work resumes, verify the reinstatement date rather than assuming coverage returns on the first shift. Ask whether new enrollment, evidence of insurability for supplemental coverage, or a contribution period is required. Review spouse and child coverage as well.
Plan continuity without spending money needed for essentials
An individual life policy can reduce dependence on employment eligibility, but premiums must remain affordable during a slow work period. Compare a sustainable benefit amount and duration with the household's actual support need. Ordinary life insurance does not replace wages lost because hours were reduced while the insured is alive.
Avoid making a new policy decision solely from fear that a benefit might end. First resolve the evidence. Then compare continuation rights, existing individual insurance, savings, and any remaining protection gap. If health or age limits available options, an expiring contractual right can deserve particular attention.
Bring the confirmed life-benefit end date, continuation terms, and household budget to a JFZ coverage discussion. We can help organize individual insurance questions alongside the fund's answer. An inquiry is not a claim, an appeal, or a union-benefit election, and it does not authorize changes to existing coverage.
Quick recap
- Multiemployer life eligibility follows the specific plan, not a universal union rule.
- Hours worked, contributions received, and coverage months may differ.
- An hour-bank balance does not by itself prove every benefit continues.
- Confirm life coverage separately from health continuation and preserve election deadlines.
